Veterinary care in Canada

We list 1,532 clinics across 12 province/states in Canada. Of those, 90 advertise emergency services and 70 post 24-hour hours, and 10 are flagged as low-cost or nonprofit. The best-covered province/states are Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec, Nova Scotia.

Emergency hospitals cluster in population centers, because an overnight ICU only sustains itself where the caseload supports it. If you live outside one, an after-hours crisis means a drive — and the useful time to establish where is now, not then. The distance search ignores province/state boundaries entirely and simply ranks by how far away things actually are, which is usually what you want.

Before you drive

Always call first. Hospitals divert cases when full, overnight staffing changes, and "24-hour" occasionally means the phone is answered around the clock rather than a vet being on site. Ask directly whether there is a vet in the building and whether they can take your case tonight. For suspected poisoning, Pet Poison Helpline on (855) 764-7661 (24/7, consultation fee applies) gives treatment advice immediately — often while you are still deciding whether to travel.

Typical costs in Canada

An emergency exam and triage typically runs C$150–C$300 before any treatment, and an emergency needing an overnight stay commonly lands between C$1,000–C$3,500. Greater Toronto and Vancouver run highest; the Prairies and Atlantic provinces are typically lower. We don't publish clinic-specific prices, because no practice can quote a case without examining the animal. See the full cost guide.

About these listings

Compiled from public sources plus our own research, ordered by objective facts only — 24-hour status, then emergency services, then alphabetically. No clinic pays to be listed or to rank higher. Every clinic page shows when it was last checked, and hours change faster than any directory can track, which is why every page here says call ahead. How we build our listings.
