Finding an emergency vet, fast
At 2am, the problem is rarely that no clinic exists β it is that you cannot tell which of the places on a map is actually open, actually takes emergencies, and actually answers the phone. Search results are full of practices that closed years ago and "24-hour" listings that turn out to mean an answerphone. This site exists to collapse that into one decision.
Use the distance search β it ranks clinics by how far they actually are from you, with estimated drive times, rather than by which town they happen to sit in. A clinic fifteen minutes away in the next town is more use than one across your own city. Then call before you drive. Emergency hospitals divert cases when their ICU is full, overnight staffing changes, and posted hours are the first thing to go stale in any directory, this one included.
The signs that mean go now
If you are trying to decide whether this warrants an emergency visit, four things override everything else: labored breathing (and any open-mouth breathing in a cat),gums that are pale, white, blue or gray, a hard swollen abdomen with retching that produces nothing, and collapse or sudden profound dullness. Any one of those means drive, whatever else looks fine. So does a male cat straining in the litter tray without producing urine β that one kills within a day or two and is constantly mistaken for constipation.
Emergency hospitals take triage calls all night and do not charge for them. If you are unsure, that call is free and the people answering it would much rather talk you through a false alarm than meet your animal two hours too late. Ourfull triage checklistgoes through it properly.
