How emergency vet care works in Australia
Australian emergency care is dominated by dedicated networks — Animal Emergency Service, Animal Referral Hospital, SASH and the Animal Emergency Centre group — clustered around the eastern seaboard capitals, with strong independents in Perth and Adelaide. Many operate evening-to-morning rather than around the clock, opening precisely when general practices close.
Before you call
Check the hours before you drive, not just the address: a centre listed as an emergency hospital may only open at 6pm on weeknights while running 24 hours across the weekend. Outside the capitals, after-hours cover is frequently the local practice on an on-call roster rather than a staffed building.
Where cover is thin
Distance is the defining problem. Regional Queensland, the Northern Territory, and inland Western Australia and South Australia can be many hours from any staffed overnight facility, and in those areas the on-call number for your usual practice is the realistic first call.
